Tim Stafford Surfboards

Mostly bonzer inspired creations, made in Cornwall. Designed, shaped, glassed, sanded, finned and finished by Tim Stafford.

I make boards that are easy to ride, that feel natural under foot. Most aren't conventional but they will help you reach that point where you stop thinking about what's under your feet and start to focus on where you want to go and how you want to get there. Why bonzers?

The Sprat - bonzer bottom quad

Welcome to the new model, the sprat. Inspired by the general shortewning of boards i wanted to make something 5'8 that was accessible to older surfers. The sprat features a very thick nose and a relaxed entry rocker but with a pronounced tail rocker and kick. Plenty of volume throughout for wave catching and a wide tail for drive and boosting off the lip.Double concave vortex channel through the middle (for lift under the front foot) blends into a quadruple concave V channel under the back foot (guiding water between the 4 fins), finishing with a kick-tail rocker with subtle single concave (for extra squirt)... So it was fun to shape, especially as my tool of choice, concave surform, had gone walk about.

Atlantic POD - new DEMO

New 6 fin bonzer coming out soon, the Atlantic POD, based on a board Malcolm made me several years ago this is my take and update on his classic design.

Same length and width but with a twin rear fin set up and the EVO front 4s... a little more rocker in the tail, thinner more modern rails, narrower nose, and an adapted bonzer concave bottom. All these changes should make for a quicker  more reactive board that should suit the Atlantic energies nicely.

Pics coming next week whern i have finished shaping it... in the meantime here is a pic of the original board that inspired me.

Green Giant bonzer light vehicle

Finally finished this bonzer light vehicle… no pics of the light vehicle channels as you all know what they look like right! 7’6 x 23” x 3”…

Instead the focus is on the “impossible spray” admirably handled by Chris “Harry” Harris with direction from yours truly and Jake. The difficulty was masking the circle on a surface curving in all directions, and taping a colour-band and pinline on a curve and around a rail (instead of coming to an apex…) sounds simple? It wasn’t and sent one sprayer off to London questioning their chosen profession. We like to challenge, and Harry was up for it after a little encouragement. The results were great, and a happy customer.

Design, shaping & colour mixing by yours truly, artwork design by Jake, resin tint by Jason, sanding by Daz, spray by “Harry”, polish by Stevie “two-fins”.

Wooden bonzer 5

I cant post the finished article yet as I want Pete to be the first to see it when it arrives by carrier to Scotland... this shot was taken just before i started artwork and staining. Loved how this shot showed the expansion joint in the nose, and the subtle but very definite concaves through the tail.

Campbell Bros thruster…

2 of Malcolm’s boards intrigued me the other day, just out from hot coat i was feeling the concaves, feeling for the second little channel… there was none! Unusually contemporary shape for a bonzer 3 i thought, so i looked at the fin dots and they weren’t long enough… so i checked the worksheet and blow me down but in big writing was NOT A BONZER… yep these were two very tidy looking thrusters with Malcolm's bonzer bottom artfully crafted into the tail… it felt so different to the standard double concaves that run across most boards these days. I can’t wait to hear how they go…

Hand-foiled Royal Tubercles

Well the tubercles for Rob Royal’s twinzer for the fish fry are nearly complete… This time i have foiled them much more closely to the actual humpback whale profile, which is an absolute swine as the tubercles are blunt and the foil is between them, but I am really pleased with the results. Got a little finessing to do before they get the glass and halo and then set off to Rob just in time (I hope)…
