Made in Widemouth Bay, Cornwall by Tim Stafford SurfboardsUnknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger426125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-64081134149200943202018-03-26T04:05:00.002-07:002018-03-26T04:22:05.928-07:00Mid length Duos...This mid-length design of mine, "The Veesyrider", seems to be pretty popular at the moment, and no surprise. The design doff it hat to Neil Purchase Jr.s Duos in the fin set up and the retro V-bottom boards of the transition era, but are distinctly new in the combination and the years of experience in understanding the finer combinations or rocker, bottom contours and rail shape.

They really do make surfing easy and fun.

They have way more speed than a single fin or thruster and have a wonderful simplicity that seems to help all skill levels get more from their surfing. They catch waves like a long-board yet accelerate like a short-board and turn on a dime.
John was no stranger to bonzers, already having 2 and wanted to take his surfing up a level and have something for local waves and surf trips.

We worked out the best options were a 6'2 ORCA asymmetrical bonzer and a 6'8 Cleanline travel bonzer 5.

Like most of my builds, the process tends to be pretty involved (and at times challenging when talking about ability, waves he wants to ride) and by the end of it it always seems that we've made a new friend. I think that's one of the most rewarding things about custom board building, the relationship that develops between the rider, shaper and the end product.

I like lending my boards out, It's a great way to get feedback outside of my own experiences. Right now the ORCA is on a trip in Ireland and I've had a couple of brief positive messages.

Its getting put through its paces on points and reefs, lefts and rights all over the west coast...
Here's a couple of pics.

Meanwhile here at "The Farm" in Widemouth Bay i'm shaping a little slop groveller custom ORCA for south west Cornwall. Good to be shaping again after my injury and as always after a break it takes a little longer to get in the rhythm, but so far so good. Loving the wider shorter outline and more relaxed rocker.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-25188883709996172372017-10-04T05:51:00.002-07:002017-10-04T05:56:25.403-07:00Just Bonzers - Long time goneWell it seems like a hell of time since I last blogged, mainly because it is. Just Bonzers now sits there a window to a past. Through all that time boards have been made, ridden, improved, evolved and broken.

So why now, well apart from the fact that it's been too long to leave a welcome receptacle for my expressions about making bonzers, I just rode the new mid length NARB and needed more space to comment than felt right for facebook or instagram.

7-6 NARB by Tim Stafford Custom Surfboards

The NARB started out as an EVO asymmetric bonzer long-board... fortunately the customer who ordered it didn't get on with it so i took it back and decided to try to learn why? From the first surf the board flew, but it did require some basic long-board skills, the ability to walk a bit up and down the board. Over the next 3 years the board became my favourite whenever i felt like a change from my short-board, whatever the wave size.

Then fate rolled the dice with a sh*t blank and I found myself with a 7'10 "freebie" to shape... I've never been much of one for mid-lengths but it seemed a 7'6" NARB was the obvious candidate and so it began. I kept the nose, added some width in the tail same as my short-boards, played with the rocker and rails until several iterations later i had the board designed you see below.

Resin tint metal flake inlay on asymmetric bonzer

Glassing, I wanted something special for myself, just for a change, so decided to do a circular inlay cut into the laminate tint, used some metal flake and contracting colours to create some sunsets in the board, which seemed really apt as i am always painting them inspired by the view out of my kitchen window most evenings. A double deck lam and gloss n polish later and the board was finally ready for a surf yesterday.

So there I was waxing up a shiny polish (which always seems crazy when you've spent hours polishing it yourself) at Black Rock, with chest high peeling rights in front of me. Any doubts were washed away with the first wave. The board caught waves so easily there was guilt involved... it got in so early and was so stable on take off, it really was very similar to riding the 9'2" I'd just sold. And things kept getting better, the first turn was buttery smooth and full of drive. It came off the top very similarly to my short-boards and then went into smooth roundhouses with ease. There was the usual mass of speed with freedom to choose your line of attack, as with any of my asymmetric bonzers. I had a blast, wave after wave, set after set carving smooth fast lines though a mostly slow and slopey right hander.

As you might have guessed by now, I love this board. It required no adaptation, no learning curve, no mastery of some mysterious sweet spot, it just flew. It delivered in spades and the promise it conveys is huge; Since then ive had it out in some chunky left point waves and again it impressed, with super early wave entry and masses of drive to make waves from deep.

There is nothing quite like riding a new design you crafted yourself from start to finish, especially when it works this well. Truly stoked. I hope you've enjoyed this window into a board maker's craft and just what it means to those of us out there who work for the love of the craft we ride.
Over the last year I've been experimenting with the Duo design based on Neil Purchase Jrs ideas. I have to say I love them...

I have found the design to be very fin & rail sensitive so if you are going to order one from someone make sure they ride them. I've settled on a formula that i think gets the best out of the concept now, providing a very fast and loose board that is really easy to ride and get the most out of in a wide range of conditions.

I don't think they have a specific slot in a quiver as the design is so versatile. I ride my 6'2 in everything from waist high slop to well overhead and it seems to go really well in everything.

I often get asked how do they surf, and that is hard to explain. They are very fast down the line like a single fin, but also provide an immediate squirt much like a twinnie. At the same time they have great hold, a bit like a thruster but you don't need the "tap-tap" to get them going through flat spots, they just glide.

6'2 Duo Surfboard inspired by Neil Purchase Junior

I love the simplicity of the design and they are a pleasure to make. My latest is a 6'8" rounded pin for chunkier stuff. Of course i still use my Orca's more than any other boards but its really good to have an alternative when i feel like a change...

So to sum it up Duo Surfboards are a valid and high performance alternative to a thruster, with a greater wave range per board, and more speed. If you fancy exploring this more just drop me a message.
reflecting on this and the nature of art. To me it is an expression, a
communication of beauty. For me art is all around us. It's not just what we see
but in what we hear, touch, feel. It's in the way someone smiles, the
inflection in their voice, the glint in their eyes, their unique walk and the
way they look into you. It's in the sun bursting through the space between
leaves, it’s every wind inspired rustle, it’s the light glinting off a cresting
wave and the calamity of the pebbles tumbling in the shore-break.

Totally missed the deck but cut a little rail (again about 3/4”off centre)… so I said to Nige “what the f**k you gonna do with that!” and he said “you want it, you can have it…” Of course i jumped at the chance, there was something kind of familiar in its chopped off nose and the gouge looked like an interesting starting point for something… so Friday I had a few minutes left after shaping Ant’s 2 Zen Dogs and decide to try some templates.

Now in the modern shaping room templates are as much there for nostalgia and the odd adjustment, so there wasn’t exactly a load to choose from… but i found some curves that i liked and got started. Felt like it wanted a shovel nose and a twin pin tail… so that was my starting point.

I am still unsure where this board is going… its dimensions are pretty obscure already due to the machine’s influence… 7’10 x 23 x 2 1/2” – so at the end of the day once i have skinned the blank both sides this board wont be any thicker than 2 1/4” is my guess. Here is what he thinks.
“I am without doubt a surfboard monogamist. I truly believe that a surfer’s boards should evolve from one to the next, that the shape of a new ‘stick’ should be based around the characteristics that were liked and disliked on the last one, i.e. “I love the way this board paddles but I want it to turn harder”. Having evolved through a series of boards over a few years, I felt as though I had found exactly what I wanted and I’d stuck with it. However, that was seven years ago. I was married and happily so. Until Tim came along.
The Joker was Tim’s first longboard. With any shaper this would cause me concern. With Tim I needn’t have worried. I’ve only ever met one other shaper with the same obvious understanding of surfboard dynamics and believe me with nearly two decades experience in the surf industry, I’ve talked to a lot of well-known shapers. Unlike many who seem intent on surrounding their art with mysticism, Tim explains things in a way that is logical, straight forward and makes sense; the guy obviously knows his stuff. He is also a friend of mine and that meant I was open to persuasion, a lot of persuasion. Maybe it was time to try something new.
On one of those fun, clean, chest-high beach break days, I finally gave in; I started my affair. At first I didn’t like it. I was so used to my board that I got frustrated rather than patiently adapting my technique to suit a board that paddled differently, was more responsive and was just......... different. I gave up, claiming my old board back after a few waves. Glad to be back on the board I knew and trusted.
A week later, more ear-bending from Tim and I gave The Joker another try. This time something clicked. I dropped, bottom-turned and cross-stepped to the nose. I couldn’t believe how stable this board was for nose riding! Tim will tell you it’s to do with the way the nose flexes as you stand on it. I didn’t care. I just know I liked it, I liked it a lot. A slower section, I walked back to the tail, made a couple of turns to build up speed and ‘wack’, hit the lip on the close-out. Man, where did that come from? Tim didn’t say a word as I paddled back out, my smile was enough. This time it was a little harder for him to get his board back.
I have to say it has taken me a while to get used to The Joker, to feel as though I’m getting to know it in that ‘one’ way I have with my other board. And, unsurprisingly, at times I go back to my ‘wife’ of seven years. On occasion I find The Joker, with its continuous rocker, a little awkward to paddle and that’s something I’ll ask Tim to address on the next evolution; when I start my next affair. The thing about the Joker is, I’ve never spent so much time on the nose. This board nose rides so easily! What really gets me though is that it turns hard as well. I find it hard to comprehend that combination; a longboard that nose rides and turns well. How do you make a board like that? I guess you’d better ask Tim. I’m just glad he isn’t a marriage counsellor.
Jon Price, Big Blue
<a big-up
Merrick from Florida finally got his Atlantic POD wet the other day and sent through his great email. Thanks Merrick.
“Hey Tim, I am real angry over this Atlantic POD. We had some of the best waves around here in a long time, lined up, pure glass and I rode the POD. It rode so AWESOME that now I think this is my favourite board and not the asymmetric Orca anymore HA HA HA HA HA.
The pod fired up, i was taking nice drops, fading my turns , the waves lined up making it scream down the line. I got so tubed and came flying out one wave. Another wave i was s-turning down the line, the face opened up and went round and i was able to do a sharp cut back on the tail, pull it back around and get tubed. This board is going to Indo for sure. I surfed almost 6 hours today. it was waist to head high, over cast light offshore winds and i was able to grab some of the big sets before anyone else , i always do that LOL. Some of the guys paddling out were hooting as I came screaming down the set of the day - going so fast I love it. One guy asked me do you surf Indo, I laughed and said “no i had never been there but i will be going”, he said the way you draw your lines and make your drops. i told him I am a kid who grew up surfing in the 70’s so I learned to draw my lines on single fins and I am all about style and speed.
Ok I am rambling now. The board is so much fun, fast loose and just great. Every board I have from you is very special in their own way.
Talk to you later, Merrick”
 Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-7992555298078639972013-02-13T05:59:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.032-07:00Classic

Who was to know what impact this shot would have on my life at the time it came out in Surfer Mag in the 70s.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-79671132267975606342013-02-03T14:38:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.072-07:00Of late…
I have been surfing more than shaping. There seems to have been a sudden drop in orders despite the Surfers Path advert… and this has coincided with the most prolonged run of epic surf i since I moved to North Devon, allowing me to really explore the coast and ride some hidden gems entirely alone.

I have been able to really explore my asymmetric shapes as the waves have been so good, almost like being overseas (the almost being the water temperature). I love them, and that LokBox TS Cutaway fish foil is part of the magic.

So i count my blessings and remember how lucky i am to be able to surf, to design and make the sleds that let me glide over the water, sometimes gracefully.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-46897979363015363412013-01-31T15:59:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.080-07:00Asymmetric happiness
Rode the asymmetric today in nicely overhead point surf, backside – still loving it!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-36544946825404390102013-01-11T14:13:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.120-07:00North Atlantic Right Board
This is my new Long(ish)board… it finally graced the waves last weekend and what a baptism. I LOVE this board, everything from the shape and tint to the accidental resin bleeds on the nose concave panel.

I was surfing a right hand reef at about head-high. This is probably the easiest wave catcher i have ever had and the board was so manoeuvrable and drivey i really did wonder whether I would ever bother with a shortboard again (which i did later this week but that’s another review).

It delivered in every area. Even roundhouse cutbacks, which on an 8’10 for a shortboarder is saying something. I even had a few cover-ups as the board rode so beautifully high and tight in the pocket. I guess it further reinforces my belief that asymmetrics really are the best way to go.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-37641306412966337072013-01-03T07:16:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.128-07:00East Coast EVOs
Atlantic POD and Orca sent over to Florida just before Christmas. Glad to say he is recovering and going to be hitting the Italian breaks again soon.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1675730779964630027.post-86452367122074163802012-12-12T15:31:00.000-08:002014-05-20T09:22:43.215-07:00Polishing
Friday i will polish the Long(ish) asymmmetric… been a long week of other stuff and will be so good to finally get that board finished.
